Green School

Green-Schools is an international environmental education programme, environmental management system and award scheme that promotes and acknowledges long-term, whole school action for the environment.

It is a long-term programme that introduces participants (students, teachers, parents and the wider community) to the concept of an environmental management system.

In St Mary’s we want our students’ voices to be heard on environmental issues. A Green School Committee was formed in 2019 with representatives from each year group. Our motto is ST.MARY’S– GREEN and CLEAN. We are currently working on our Litter and Waste Green flag and have run many exciting events.

Our Green School week 2020 was a great success. Guest speakers sponsored by Repak and Dublin City Council, explained how to recycle properly and encouraged us to use as little plastic as possible. Having warned us of the dangers to the environment we are raising awareness among students, teachers, and our families. Each class is actively working on this project. A pledge wall was created where every student promised to make one change to reduce their carbon footprint. Our creative students upcycled recyclable materials into amazing ‘Fantastical Hats’.

In October 2020 2nd years Rang De Valera were offered a place on An Taisce’s ‘Neat Streets’ programme which they successfully complete in May 2021. Three students attended the Annual Conference by zoom in April and Rebecca Foley won a prize in the’ Instabin’ competition for her anti-litter Tik Tok. A team led by Jennifer Adamczyk, Ellie Coyne and Ella Gillard entered the ERY (Young reporters for the environment) video competition and were placed ‘highly commended in’ the Final in June 2021. They spoke passionately about ‘Litter in Lockdown’ and its effects on wildlife and our environment.

St. Mary’s continues to be conscious of environmental issues and the importance of being a Green School.
