First Year Trip to Belfast
First Year students enjoyed an educational trip to Belfast on May 5th when they attended W5 in Belfast. W5 offers a rich and unique learning environment for students relevant and relatable to the curriculum. The students thoroughly enjoyed the experience and they were a pleasure to take on the trip. Thanks to Year Head Ms Hart for co-ordinating.
Green Schools
We are delighted to be finalists in the ECO-UNESCO’s Young Environmentalist Awards (YEA) in the category of biodiversity. YEA is an all-Ireland environmental awards programme that recognises and rewards young people who raise environmental awareness and improve the environment.
Since 1999, ECO-UNESCO has run the YEA programme to honour the work of young people to protect, conserve and enhance the environment through local environmental projects, making a difference to their lives and the lives of others both locally and globally. Over 49,000 young people have taken part in the YEA since it began, bringing about lasting change to the environment, and reaching countless others with awareness-raising campaigns in schools and communities throughout Ireland.
The YEA programme is a fun and exciting way to empower young people to become better citizens, to build awareness of environmental issues in the community and promote local actions and lifestyle changes to the environment.
LCVP News
As part of their engagement with voluntary organizations, our 5th year LCVP class organized a visit from Aoife and her assistance dog Ally @irishguidedogs . It was very interesting and informative and the students will now organize a fundraiser on Sports Day to make a contribution to the important work of the charity.
Garda Band
The Garda band visited the school on Thursday, May 12th as part of our Teenagers and Guards Programme (TAG) awards ceremony for Transition Year students. Students were presented with certificates having fulfilled the TAG in recent months. The aim of the Programme is to promote positive relationships between young people and the Guards.
First, second and TY students attended the concert which was most enjoyable. It was great to have a live performance back in the school.
TY Trip to Glendalough
As part of Gaisce-The President's Award, Transition Year students hiked in Glendalough enduring heavy rain and a challenging climb to meet the requirements of the Bronze award. The Adventure Journey often proves to be the most memorable aspect of Gaisce for participants. It is an opportunity to plan, train for and complete an outdoor activity over a number of days/nights as part of a team. It is a unique, challenging and memorable experience that creates strong bonds between students as well as the opportunity to develop self-sufficiency and leadership skills.
After night one the sun shone and Glendalough was spectacular.
Science Winners
The Science Department has been busy with all things SciFest. In March, an in-school event took place for second years which showcased a range of interesting experiments which were adjudicated for feedback and prizes. The regional heat took place in May at DCU and we were thrilled to have two top winners in the competition at DCU which involved 18 schools. Well done to all our SciFest participants and to Emma and Abagail who scooped the top awards.
Fifth Year Campus Tour
As part of the Aspire 2 programme, 5th year student attended a campus tour of DCU on Tuesday, May 10th with Ms. Burke and Mr. Kavanagh. Students travelled by bus from the school. They were met on campus by a team of student ambassadors who each shared their journey to college and gave an insight into student life. They also brought our students on a tour to visit some of the different faculties of the university. Feedback on the event was very positive particularly the opportunity to interact with the DCU students.
Basketball
Well done to our U16 team who beat Maryfield College on Friday, May 6th to qualify for the SSA Leinster finals. This is a wonderful achievement and we congratulate all the players.
